Amsterdam: J. Vlieger, 1890. Folio. 1ff. Lithographic sheet game board, measuring 22 1/2 by 17 inches (571x431mm), released by Dutch board game publisher J. Vlieger. A variation of the classic Royal Game of the Goose, in which players take turns rolling dice to progress forward from space 1 to space 63. Specially marked spaces grant perks, such as the ability to roll again, or inflict penalties, like losing your turn or starting over. This particular version is based on the Amsterdam tramway. Players are divided into two teams, each traveling in opposite directions on red and blue tracks. The instructions printed at the top of the board explain the rules for the special spaces, which are marked with images of horses and horse-drawn trams. The trams are emblazoned with advertisements for Van Houten's cocoa, and each is labeled with a real station name, including Leidscheplein, which was part of the first horse-drawn tramway line in Amsterdam in 1875. Between 1900 and 1906, all of the horse-drawn trams were replaced with electric trams, making this board game not only a novel twist on a classic game but also an interesting look into the early days of public transportation in the Netherlands. Includes the original printed envelope, which dubs this a "cozy winter night game." Very fine.
