Hove, England: E. Williams, 1915. Hardy, Thomas. THE OXEN. Hove, England: (Privately Printed by E. Williams), 1915. First Separate Edition. NEAR FINE crisp copy of this scarce sewn pamphlet containing the two-leaf printed poem "The Oxen." THE OXEN is a Christmas poem freely distributed to the English people in late December during a dire winter season in which the trenches were filled with suffering World War One soldiers. Hardy's poem conjures up the Oxen, one of the beasts in the manger which attended the birth of Christ and fell to its knees in wonder. But the beautiful sentimental simplicity of the manger scene of the poem is set against the irony of those suffering most from the war and conveys Hardy's deep and aching desire to return to a simpler past. THE OXEN is, in our opinion, one of the greatest of Hardy's war poems and its power can still be felt today. Beautifully presented in a custom blue cloth folder with marbled paper. . First Edition Thus. Printed Wrappers. Near Fine. (Inventory #: 002072)
