Berlin, 1870. First edition. Folded. A very good copy, three small holes, edges mildly worn.. 1 sheet. Signed by Augustus Loftus as "Chargé des Affaires et interets des Francais en Prusse" on the 8th day of October, 1870 at Berlin for the outward journey only of "Madame Kerzebel (citoyenne Francais) accompanie de trois fils et trois filles, allant en Russie." Verso stamped over seven times with numerous manuscript entries all in Cyrillic, dated from 1870 through 1871. The passport was issued three months after the Franco-Prussian War (19 July 1870 -10 May 1871) had begun between the Second French Empire and the German states of the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia, thus explaining Loftus' role as "Chargé des Affaires." Augustus Loftus (1817-1904) was Ambassador to Prussia from 1865 to 1868, to the North German Confederation from 1868 to 1871, and to the Russian Empire from 1871 to 1879.
