Carte de l'Entree de la Riviere de Canton dans la Chine
by BELLIN, Jacques Nicolas
Paris: Bellin, Nicolas, 1764. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving. Uncolored. Image measures 8 1/2" x 6 3/4" This impressive 1764 map by Bellin depicts the mouth of the River Canton, including Macao, Shenzhen, Guangzhou (historically called Canton) and the region that would eventually become Hong Kong. The islands are depicted with beautifully rendered coastlines. Depth soundings are included along the channel (Shizi Ocean) and several place names noted. The Island of Macao shows elevations with Macao City identified. Near the top, Guangzhou (Quang Tchew-Fu Canton) is shown surrounded with forts and divided into Ville des Tartares and de Chinois. Shenzhen (Sinn-gan-hein) is identified with a small island to its west (possibly Lantau Island?). The map is in good condition and retains its natural black and white dark impression. Original plate mark is visible. Minor foxing at places. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), was the official hydrographer to the French king and the first person to hold the title of "Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine" (chief engineer of the French Hydrographical Office).
