THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE (Unusual 1896 American Pirated Edition)
by Hardy, Thomas
New York: United States Book Company, 1896. Hardy, Thomas. THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE. New York: United States Book Company, [c. 1896]. NEAR FINE copy, pages a little brittle, touch of wear to the outer hinges. A fascinating Hardy reprint. The John Lovell Company, notorious engine of piracy of English novels, disbanded and re-formed in 1896 as The United States Book Company. Not only is this text pirated, the binding design is almost an exact copy of the Henry Holt "Leisure Moment" series (for Hardy: 1873-1886) which faithfully presented the author's official first American editions. The binding also neglects to get the title right, leaving off "THE" and reading "Return Of The Native." Peculiar and rare.. Near Fine. (Inventory #: 002080)
