PRINTER AND THE POET, AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRINTING OF `THE TAPESTRY' BASED UPON CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN STANLEY MORISON AND ROBERT BRIDGES.|THE
by Barker, Nicolas
Cambridge: Privately printed, 1970. cloth-backed boards. Cambridge Christmas Books. tall 8vo. cloth-backed boards. (vi), 43+(1) pages with a 4 page insert. First edition, limited to 500 copies. One of the Cambridge Christmas Books. The bibliography (A Printer's Christmas Books by Brooke Crutchley) notes: "When letter forms are all electronically generated, what on earth will people think about so much to-do (not confined to this book) surrounding the birth of Frederic Warde's Arrighi - a somewhat exquisite type which very few people have ever seen? The Printer and the poet, and several other books in this series, will presumably be read with quiet amusement, perhaps by some with a little sadness. Its success from a design point of view is the subtlety with which the numerous quotations and letters are distinguished from Nicolas Barker's own text with no more interruption to reading than is needed to shift gear". Appleton notes: "The inset, 4 pages from The Tapestry was printed by Giovanni Mardersteig at the Officina Bodoni using the actual type cast for the printing of The Calligraphic Models of Ludovici degli Arrighi...". (Appleton, 372). Corner slightly bumped. (Inventory #: 22736)
