WEDDING CELEBRATION PAINTING. RIXEY MANOR, CULPEPER COUNTY, 1944
A charming hand watercolored wedding celebration painting by "Gracie" for "Joanie and Bob", obviously in commemorating a nuptial gathering at Rixey Manor in Rixeyville, Culpeper County near the end of the Second World War. ~~Rixey was built in the early 19th century by Charles Rixey, who family lived there for 200 years . The house survived the Civil War intact, amazingly given that Union and Confederate soldiers were all over the property during the Civil War.~~The house is a popular today as a wedding venue. Clearly that was the case in 1944 as well. The certificate is delightful, with paintings of the house, waiters with serving trays, a soldier pouring water over his tennis partner, a dog chasing a bunny rabbit, delivery trucks for the Arlington County Dairy, and, endearingly, Woodward and Lothrop. The painting is signed by 40 guests, including Frank Persons who was recruited by the Roosevelt to head up the CCC's selection process under the United States Employment Service. ~~A splendidly cheerful artifact from the period near the end of World War II -- when it seemed like absolutely everyone was getting married!
