Truman spent his 65th birthday by attending services at the First Baptist Church in Washington. Also being Mother's Day, the communion table was festooned with flowers memorializing his mother, Mrs. Martha Truman, who died in 1947. May 8 also had additional significance for Truman. It was on that day in 1945, only a month after he had become President, that he announced the capitulation of German forces in Europe.
