Good. 1889. A unique autograph album from a military school in Burlington, Vermont. Decoratively embossed brown leather boards. Edges and raised surfaces are rubbed, spine is loose with cracked hinges, and the endpapers and a few blank pages have what looks like insect nibbles on the very edge. Light soil on boards and pages. Worn silver page edges. The autograph book has some color lithograph wintery scenes on a few pages including the first page. The hand-drawn illustrations with the school building and various coats of arms annd weaponry in red and black ink exhibit some fine detail. Each symbol has a blank area for an autograph that is filled in, with some autographs on other blank pages. 12 pages are filled in. Traced names include Hamilton Ward Jr. , State Attorney General of New York and veteran of the Spanish-American War; Walter E. Merrill, a surgeon in the Marines; and H. S. Vincent, later owner of a hardware store in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Signatures date from February, 1889. The Rock Point school was known as the Episcopal institute but the drawing is hand-captioned Rock Point Military Institute. ; 5" x 8" . (Inventory #: 010835)
