Ovid's Art of Love and Art of Beauty, with notes and illustrations
by Ovid; John Dryden, trans
London: T. Noble, Fleet Street, 1845. Hardcover. Good. Apparently the first edition of this from this publisher, 1845 (no copies on OCLC of this edition but 3 copies of the 1846 edition from the same publisher, with same pagination). 12mo, original dark brown cloth gilt, xi (13)-128, with color frontispiece, colored vignette on title page, 2 additional color plates. Good plus copy with light wear to spine ends and corners, contents VG and clean. Colored plates are rather crude in execution, featuring for the frontispiece a bare-breasted woman leaning over a nude youth in an outdoor bridal bower, the two plates featuring a nude bathing Venus and a bare-breasted woman with fairies. RARE on the market and a most uncommon piece of early English color plate erotica.
