It gave me quite a feeling of what the literary life must be like over there. Todd [(?) Ruthven] sounds like a good guy.He goes on to ask what the production costs were for the autobiography. Then turns to Kenneth Patchen: "I'm glad you can do something for and with Patchen. He needs it. He writes too much and his books aren't as good as they should be and don't get beyond a small public here. He is one of those fellows who won't take any advice or criticism...."He writes that he is sending a 100 copies of ND9 that week; they are to be crated, parcels being too expensive: "let me know how to invoice them so that there would be the least duty for you to pay. I'm all in the dark on the British tricks." He then instructs Gardiner on how to invoice books coming into the U.S. and explains that he must indicate that none of the contributors to the volumes are American which means the difference between 7 1/2% and 20% duty.He ends by asking Gardiner, if he sees Sean Jennett, to tell him to send repro proofs or clean pages of the Baudelaire so he can offset, ":If they don't hurry we (and they) will lose thousands of sales through a rival publisher's getting out first with an inferior product."The first page has the 500 Fifth Avenue Address for the New Directions Office, and the second page, also a letterhead has the old address of 67 West 44th Street!
