New York: Doubleday, Page & Co, 1919. First edition, first issue. 385, [blank] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. A fine copy in original blue cloth, spine and upper board gilt. Dustjacket a little chipped with some edgewear. First edition, first issue. 385, [blank] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Conrad wrote to Sir Sidney Colvin, "I have never been able to read these proofs on cold blood. Ridiculous! ... there are some of these 42-year-old episodes of which I cannot think now without a slight tightness of the chest - un petit serrement de coeur." Conrad had finished the novel in June, 1918, after nine months of work dictating it - a method of composition he disliked. Jessie Conrad wrote to Keating: "It was the first one he dictated completely and whole passages show his irritable dislike for that method, and also such a method was strange to him."Pinker sold the English serial rights to Lloyd's Magazine and dispatched a copy of the manuscript to Doubleday, whose efforts to sell the serial rights in the US were unsuccessful, due to the lack of "episodes" in the books. Doubleday pushed for imediate book publication; Conrad pushed for delays and demanded to see page proofs (for this first time). Even so, he was not unhappy with the American edition when it appeared.
