Published in the year Cooper completed her dissertation. The daughter of a slave, the Oberlin-educated Cooper became an educator, "feminist, human rights advocate, distinguished scholar, essayist, author, lecturer, and vital force in the late nineteenth-century Black woman's club movement." (Hine, p. 276). Her attainment of the doctorate made her the fourth African American woman to earn a Ph. D.
