"The book contains the results of research on the collection of plaster casts of the Vittoriano, the monument to King Vittorio Emanuele II. It consists of a rich documentary kit of mostly unpublished works, offering the first scientific studies on athe use of chalk (a cheaper sculpting material) to date not highly regarded, and, because of its soft and pliable nature, raises many questions about its preservation. Includes an examination as to the extent and quality of the collection, as well as the intrinsic nature of the works that are preserved, almost all sketches, and they are analyzedfor their relevance by the various artistic ommissions tha,t from the beginning, emphasized the importance preservation. The volume proposes specific conservation efforts for the plaster works, and various authors present the outcomes of diagnostic investigations aimed at the recognition of the different technical manipulation of the same material. Although the survey on the contents of the collection and data collected around case studies investigated are by no means exhaustive, the volume brings together the first studies on the different issues that the art historian, the scientific expert, and the restorer, have raised in the work taking shape as a useful basis for future studies on plaster works.
