New Haven: B. Mecom, 1765. ,ii,66,pp. Three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Hinges rubbed, minor shelf wear. Ownership inscription on titlepage recto. Very good. A brief treatise on morality and ethics written for the students of Yale by that institution's president. Clap was a Congregational clergyman who served as the head of Yale College for more than twenty-six years. "He impressed himself upon the community by his scholarly accomplishments, his force of character, and his indomitable will. He ruled with a rod of iron and his people endured it...These characteristics gave him success as an administrator, but made his career a stormy one" - DAB. This pamphlet provides a concise overview of ethics, morality, virtue, and human reason as these relate to religious belief. In his preface, Clap writes: "Since the study of ethics makes so great a part of an academical education, and there are professors of that science in most of the universities in Great-Britain, I have, for many years past, been in quest of some system of that kind, proper to be recited by the students; but can find none well adapted to that purpose. For though there are many treatises which contain good rules of external conduct, yet the obligation to act according to those rules, is not justly stated...As this treatise was designed, principally, for the use of the students of this college, I have, to save the charge of printing, wrote in as concise a manner, as can be intelligible, on such a critical and metaphysical subject." Clap was the author of other works concerned with religion, education, and Yale, including THE RELIGIOUS CONSTITUTION OF COLLEGES, ESPECIALLY OF YALE COLLEGE IN NEW HAVEN, and THE ANNALS OR HISTORY OF YALE COLLEGE TO THE YEAR 1766. With the bookplate of 19th-century Connecticut bibliographer, librarian, and book collector J. Hammond Trumbull. EVANS 9931. SABIN 13216. TRUMBULL 477. NAIP w020302. DAB IV, pp.116-17.
