"Esther De Berdt Reed endured long separations from her husband from July 1775 to January 1777, while he was military secretary to George Washington and then adjutant general of the Continental army. Reed served in the Continental Congress in 1777-1778, and during his presidency of the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council, Esther was Pennsylvania's "first lady."' - ANB.
