European Impressions of the New England Coast, 1497-1620 (The University of Chicago Department of Geography Research Paper No. 139)
by McManis, Douglas R.
Chicago, Illinois: The University of Chicago, 1972. Softcover. VG. Cream and maroon and illus. wraps, 150 pp., 16 BW illus. "In the years following the Columbian discovery of the New World the Atlantic seaboard of North America was the scene of many sporadic visits by seafaring Europeans, but for over a century it remained on the periphery of European New World activities which were concentrated in the West Indies, Mexico, or parts of South America. Yet those irregular visits were the initial contacts between the seaboard and Western Europeans which laid the foundations for its later transformation into a landscape dominated by European cultural patterns and processes. For this monograph one seaboard zone which was the locale of such initial Europeanization has been selected for study -- the New England coast from Passamaquoddy Bay, Maine, to Cape Cod. The period of study begins in 1497 or 1498 with the first known European visit after Columbus' first voyage and extends to 1620 -- the year in which permanent European settlement of the coast commenced at Plymouth, Massachusetts."
