[Announcement for Ray Gun Spex (or Specs), Feb. 29&Mar. 2, 1960.] (poster)
by Oldenburg, Claes, after (1929- )
Stuttgart: Archiv Sohm, 1970. This is a silkscreen poster, produced in 1970, that duplicates at double size one side of Oldenburg's design. The original was mimeographed on both sides of light green, letter-size paper. It was meant to be cut apart into six strips that served as tickets to the seven events that took place at the Judson Gallery in Manhattan's East Village. The artists and events were: Claes Oldenburg, "Snap shots from the city"; Jim Dine, "The smiling workman"; Dick Higgins, "Edifices, cabarets & contributions"; Al Hansen, "Projections"; Allan Kaprow, "Coca Cola, Shirley Cannon Ball?"; Red Grooms, "The big leap"; and Bob Whitman, "Duet for a small smell." The other side (not printed in this version) supplied the title, location, and dates. In 1970, Hanns Sohm's Archiv Sohm, now located at the Stadtsgalerie Stuttgart, commissioned this double-size version that reproduced only the side listing the events. Al Hansen and Alison Knowles produced it as a silkscreen in dark red ink on fine, heavy paper with deckle edges. Image: approx. 17.5 x 21.75 in. / 44.5 x 55.25 cm. Paper: 25.37 x 30.25 in. / 64.2 x 76.6 cm. (oversquare). Oldenburg did not like this version, so Sohm published another, slightly smaller poster in 1972 that reproduced both sides on green paper. A copy of the original 1960 version at the Archives of American Art consists of a single column from the full sheet of six. This copy is near fine, with one soft bend at the bottom left corner. Documentation from Archives of American Art, Fondazione Bonotto, and Printed Stuff by Richard Axsom. (Inventory #: 24911)
