Wilson was a royalist, lawyer and notable playwright who enjoyed the patronage of James, Duke of York, later King James II. Jus Regium Coronae is a defence of King James's decision to dispense with the penal statutes, which were established to exclude Catholics and Protestant Non-Conformists from political life. Codified in his Declaration of Indulgence (1687), this decision was one of the primary causes of the Glorious Revolution.
