New York: F. M. Lupton, 1894. First American Edition. Soft Cover. Good to Very Good. Issued as No. 32 in the People's Handbook Series; clearly pirated from a British publication. 57 pages; illustrated with wood cuts and wood engravings throughout. Sound, stapled binding. Clean, toned pages. Wear and soiling to the cover. An amazing collection of toys and tricks for late 19th century boys to make and do on their own; many would cause today's parents to go into shock. Examples include: Burning Steel (lighting a steel spring dipped into suphur and plunging it into a jar of home-made oxygen), Fire on Water (dropping a chunk of drug-store bought potassium in a basin of water where it will burst into a "brilliant violet flame"), Fire Balloon (launching a home-made hot-air ballon that carries a burning spirit-soaked piece of cotton cloth), Making Bows and Arrows, etc. Also included are many less dangerous toy-making activities featuring eletrical toys, magnetic toys, optical toys, paper & cardboard toys, model boats, fishing gear, animal traps, etc. Rather scarce: as of 2015 only one badly torn copy in the trade, no auction records at ABPC or Rare Book Hub, and held at only five institutions per OCLC. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
