by Lyrics by [Frank J. Green]; music by Septimus Winner
Bo-Peep Series, 1900. Soft Cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. An uncommon edition of this classic racist nursery rhyme. Complete with twelve colorful lithographs (one double-page) along with music and lyrics. Old, neatly done, thread and paper reinforcement to the spine. Minor wear and light soiling; faint dampstain at the top margin of several leaves. The song was originally written in 1868 by Septimus Winner as a minstrel number, titled "Ten Little Injuns." A year later, Frank Green re-wrote the lyrics as "Ten Little Niggers," in which a number of "nigger boys" meet unusual, violent deaths, one-by-one. In 1875, the McLoughlin Brothers first published Green's version as a children's book, and the song became a very popular nursery rhyme. In 1894, McLoughlin revised the lyrics so that rather than dying, the last "nigger boy" grows up, marries, and lives a happy life with his wife. (see Anderson, "Ten Little Niggers: The Making of a Black Man's Consciousness.") This edition of the rhyme includes the revised lyrics with illustrations of the marriage and the happy couple. Rather scarce; as of 2016, OCLC shows no copies of this edition held by institutions, ABPC and Rare Book Hub show no auction records, there is one copy for sale in the trade.
