Holograph letter signed and dated New York 17 May 1834 to Rev. Wm. B. Sprague
by DWIGHT, THEODORE
In fine condition.. Single 20 x 33 cm sheet folded to make four pages, approximately 400 words. A substantial and important letter by American author Theodore Dwight (1796-1866), introducing to clergyman and biographer William B. Sprague a young Polish author named August Antoni Jakubowski (1815-1837). Jakubowski was forced into exile due to his participation in the Polish November Uprising against the Russians and had moved to the U.S. Dwight outlines to Sprague in detail Jakubowski's background, education and current circumstances. Rev. Sprague had a reputation of helping Polish immigrants in Albany, and Jakubowski moved there. Dwight notes "I think that he is capable of producing some literary work of merit . . . [he] has written . . . an essay on education in his own country, which is both valuable and interesting. I propose to send the translation of it to Albany to be perused by yourself and others." The following year Jakubowski's The Remembrances of a Polish Exile was published in Albany, with an introduction by William B. Sprague. Along with other writings it contains an "Essay on Polish Poetry," a work of fiction "The Polish Lovers," and an essay "The Causes of Emigration of the Poles." It is the first work of Polish-American literature. After an illness, Jakubowski died in 1837 in Northampton, Massachusetts. (Inventory #: 27104)
