Hollywood Bowl Magazine, August...1935 (Symphonies Under the Stars), Signed By Jose Iturbi
Hollywood, CA: Southern California Symphony Association, 1935. 68p. Beginning in the 1920's, many of the greatest opera singers and musicians would perform on evenings at the Hollywood Bowl. The Hollywood Bowl Magazine began to appear in 1923 but copies are not uncommon until after World War II. This issue has a number of pages devoted to Jose Iturbi who here boldly signs page 3 under his photograph. While most movie fans know him from his role in Anchors Away and other Hollywood films, he was a major figure in the field of serious classical music. Felix Slatkin also appeared with him on the August 20th concert. There is a full page photograph of [Hubert] Stowitts who at UCLA lettered in track, performed in creative ballet and was accepted as a vital member of the gay community. Anna Pavlova discovered him and he traveled successfully in Europe and America. At the 1937 Olympics in Berlin he created a stir with his exhibit of his paintings of male Jewish and African-American athletes who were shown nude. The Nazis closed the exhibit quickly stranding him in Berlin without money but he finally was able to return to California in 1937.
