This romantic novel set in Rome was written by prolific Catholic American author Frances Christine Fisher Tiernan (1846–1920), who grew up in North Carolina and visited Europe shortly before writing this work. While Tiernan originally wrote for pleasure, she eventually published novels under the pen name Christian Reid to support her family during the Reconstruction.
