Map of Illinois showing township-level designations of "swamp land" reclamation, in response to legislation aimed at draining and otherwise reclaiming wetlands, something now known to be ecologically destructive. Of particular interest are the quantities of wetlands reclaimed along river floodplains. The federal general surveyor for Missouri and Illinois at the time was William Clark's oldest son, Meriwether Lewis Clark Sr. , named after his father's friend Meriwether Lewis.
