The Pirke Aboth consists of ethical maxims attributed to 65 teachers. Simon the Just one of the last survivors of the Great Synagogue: "Upon three things the world is based: upon the Torah, upon the Temple services, and upon the practice of charity." The image also of God seeing the secrets of men "Reflect upon three things, and thou will not come within the power of sin--know what is above thee--a seeing eye, and a hearing ear, and all thy deeds written in a book.' Another also illustrated: "neither say, when I have leisure I will study; perchance thous wilt have no leisure." To read the profound sayings from the fathers in this book might not only help the Jew who has had no training in the Torah but also to the Christian who wishes to know the meaning of Torah but has no teacher.
