The Union League Club of New York is a famous private social club in New York City founded in February 1863 during the Civil War. Tensions were high in New York, where the large Irish immigrant population bitterly opposed the war and sought to reach some accomodation with the Confederate States. Some of the well respected and well off men of New York decided to form a club with the aim of cultivating "a profound national devotion" and of strengthening "a love and respect for the Union." The founders, all members of the United States Sanitary Commission, included Henry Adams Bellows, Frederick Law Olmsted, George Templeton Strong, and Oliver Wolcott Gibbs. Olmsted wanted to recruit members from the new generation of young, wealthy men, so that the club might teach them the obligations and duties of the elite upper class. The founders aimed to established a political governing elite in support of the Union. They recognized that a centralized government was essential to their prosperity. The Club was a target for vandals during the July 1863 Draft Riots, but managed to defend their territory. A few months later, the members decided to recruit, train and equip a Colored infantry regiment for Union service; thus the 20th U.S. Colored Infantry was formed on Riker's Island in February 1864. Similarly, during World War I, the club sponsored the 369th Infantry, the famed Harlem Hellfighters, commanded by William Hayward, a club member. Notably, Theodore Roosevelt, who was listed as a Vice President of the Club in 1900/1901, is no longer listed as a member in 1903 during his time as President of the United States. OCLC: 7630647 .
