The "Anti-Climax": the concluding chapter of my Russian Diary "The Bolshevik Myth"
by BERKMAN, Alexander
Berlin: by the Author, 1925. First Edition. The "lost" final chapter of Berkman's 1925 Soviet memoir "The Bolshevik Myth," rejected from the book by publisher Horace Liveright for being insufficiently literary: Mr. Liveright rejected [the chapter] as an 'anti-climax' from a literary standpoint and insisted on leaving it out. Anxious to place my book before the public, I consented. But much as I am interested in literature, I consider the Russian Revolution and its lessons far more important than the finest writing. In a certain sense present-day Russia is indeed an anti-climax to the revolutionary aspirations of 1917 [...] I have therefore published the latter in the present brochure, for the reader's better understanding of The Bolshevik Myth and -- in justice to myself. Berkman had the pamphlet printed at his own expense and sold it to support lecture tours; the text was reissued by a London anarchist publisher in the 1980s but the first edition is fragile and infrequently found in commerce. This copy with typical wear, but still quite acceptable. Octavo (20cm). Textured brown card wrappers; 29pp. Text paper darkened and slightly brittle, with small losses to corners throughout; small chips to wrappers; still a solid, complete copy, Good.
