Sigeberti Gemblacensis Coenobitae Chronicon ad Anno 381 ad 1113 cum Insertionibus ex Historia Galfridi & Additionibus Roberti Abbatis Montis ...
by Sigebertus, of Gembtoux (Sigebert)
Paris: Ioannis Petit, 1513. Editio Princeps. Hardcover. Fine. 4to. (42)pp, 164ff. Title page in black and red, and printed throughout in black and red. Extensive index at the beginning. Recent full deep blue morocco, spine in six compartments with gilt titles, handmade paper endpapers. A few notes in an old hand, some corners of the textblock worn, but no losses noted. A very good copy. Sigebert of Gembloux (ca. 1030 - 1112) was a mediaeval historian whose best known work is this Chronicle, which covers the period 381 to 1113, but with additions bringing it up to 1210. This is the first printed edition of the Chronicle, which saw many subsequent editions. The index is particularly useful. There are several entries for King Arthur, Votigern, and a long discussion on folio 16 on the apparition of the stellar dragons in Britain and Merlin's interrogation by Uther about their meaning. No doubt there are other Arthurian references we have not located. The entry in the Arthurian Encyclopedia (p. 93) suggests that Geoffrey of Monmouth may have used Sigebert's Chronicle in his own History. In Latin.
