Map of a Portion of Douglas & La Pointe Counties, Wisconsin. Also Saint Louis and a portion of Lake County Minnesota Territory. Situated on Lake Superior
by MITCHELL, A. S.; O. W. RICE; and Richard RELF
Superior, Wisconsin: "Mitchell, Rice & Relf ... Dealers in Real Estate", 1857. Large folding map. Pictorial advertisement in upper right corner for "Ed. Mendel's Lithographic, Engraving & Map Publishing Establishment" in Chicago. Early pencil annotations along the Minnesota shore of Lake Superior. A Wisconsin and Minnesota Territory cartographic rarity: an ephemeral, large-scale mapping published by a group of real estate agents in Superior Wisconsin to promote settlement. This very large map was printed in Chicago for early Wisconsin real estate developers Mitchell, Rice and Relf to circulate among prospective buyers. The map depicts the region around Lake Superior from Long Island Bay and the Apostle Islands in the east, to Grand Lake, Minnesota in the west. Counties as they existed at that early date are identified, and most plotted for land sales. Cities and roads are shown, as are existing and proposed routes of railroads. Superior, Wisconsin was incorporated in September 1854; published in 1857, this must be the earliest map to be published in that city. It is a very rare and ephemeral map. OCLC shows only 2 holdings by American institutions: Clements and Wisconsin Historical Society. (Inventory #: 25723)
