The Lives of Picus and Pascal faithfully collected from the most authentic accounts of them. To which is subjoined a parallel between those two Christian worthies.
by Jesup, Edward.
London: Printed by W. Burton, for J. Hooke... 1723. Small 4to, (8), 47, (1), (32), 92 pp. Woodcut initials and head pieces. Life of Pascal has a separate title page and pagination. Full calf, ruled in gilt, raised bands and gilt red morocco label on backstrip. Joints split, cords still firm, foredge corners worn. Old signature on front free endpaper. Top corner of title page excised (signature removed?) with loss to ink inscription on verso of title page. Note in a different hand on final blank (see below). First edition of Jesup’s life of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, largely based on Thomas More’s writings, and his translation of Gilberte Perier's biography of her brother, Blaise Pascal. The latter work was also issued separately in the same year. This copy was given to a boy called Frederick Murray as a prize (a “praise book”) by P.N. Paschoud V.D.M. on May 4, 1727 in Little Chelsea. Paschoud records the presentation in the front of the book and Murray records his receipt of it in the back. Murray also lists the various tickets he was given, presumably steps towards being awarded this book. The minister is probably Pierre Noë (or Peter Noach) Paschoud ordained in 1716 and connected with the French Huguenot chapel in Little Chelsea. ESTC T41115. (Inventory #: 105663)
