Each volume with a total of 21 full page steel engraved portraits of noteworthy figures, including Christopher Columbus, Henry Hudson, Peter Stuyvesant, Sir Edmund Andros; John Jay, William Walton, Henry White, George Clinton, Rufus King; Alexander Hamilton, Mrs. John Jay, Robert R. Livingston, De Witt Clinton, John Jacob Astor, John Adams Dix; Hamilton Fish, Washington Irving, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Ulysses S. Grant, and David G. Farragut.Wilson, the editor of the Memorial History (1832 - 1914), served in the Civil War and then settled in New York City. He was noted as a speaker, contributor to periodicals, and president of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society.Thick 4to, Vol I: xxiv, 605pp; Vol II:, xxi, 633pp; Vol III: xxii, 664pp; Vol IV: xxiii, 648pp; top edges gilt. With illustrations, facsimiles, maps, and plans throughout text. Three quarter dark brown leather with red marbled boards, gilt titles at spines. A bit of cracking to leather at spines of Vols II & IV probably caused by proximity to a fire place. Internally, bright and clean, the engravings in very good condition.
