by Garland, Hamlin, and Edwin Willard Deming [illus]
New York & London: Macmillan Company, 1899. Gilt decorated mustard brown cloth, t.e.g., others rough-trimmed. Frontis, plates and illustrations. Cloth a trace darkened, with a few small spots, but a very good copy. First edition. Illustrated by E.W. Deming. Inscribed and signed by Garland on the half- title: "I was one of the boys...." The publisher's four-page promotional leaflet for this book is neatly tipped to the verso of the frontis. A fictionalized, but authentic, account of the life of young adult males in Iowa in the decade following the Civil War, based on Garland's own experiences. Rather less common than Garland's titles of comparable vintage. (Inventory #: WRCLIT76438)
