Shanghai (Cathay Decorative Art Studio) n.d. (circa 1930). Robert Fan, also known as Fen Wenzhao, studied at the University of Pennsylvania's architecture school. Although he started his career designing with a Beaux-Arts aesthetic, by the 1930s he had moved on to an Art Deco-inspired Modernist style, promoting function over form. He was one of the first architects to open a practice in Shanghai, and went on to design the Nanking Theater (now called the Shanghai Concert Hall), the Chinese YMCA (now the Marvel Hotel), the Yafa Court apartment complex, and the Georgia Aparments, a particularly excellent example of clean lines and modern functionality. After traveling to Europe and the United States in the 1930s, Fan further embraced modern Western architectural styles and turned against traditional Chinese design, relocating to Hong Kong and later the United States. Very scarce; as of November 2015, WorldCat locates only one holding in the United States. (Inventory #: 48365)
