The Glidden Company was started in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1875 by Francis Harrington Glidden together with Levi Brackett and Thomas Bolles. They began by making varnishes for furniture, pianos, carriages, and wagons. During the 1920's, the company underwent a massive expansion by acquiring chemical and pigment companies.
