Title and printer's device (McKerrow 341) within woodcut border (McKerrow & Ferguson 121), woodcut head- and tailpieces, initials, printer's ornaments. , 66, 59-77,  pp. Nineteenth-century crushed green morocco by Riviere & Son, gilt lozenge on covers, the spine in six compartments (lettered gilt in two), gilt double fillets on turn-ins, edges gilt; spine faded to brown, turn-ins offsetting to free endpapers, a.e.g., title-page and possibly M1 in facsimile, one or two headlines shaved. He spent eight years in Rome (1578-86) during which time he started composing verse including the initial drafts that would become this poem, which alongside his prose work Marie Magdalens Funeral Teares (1591), would establish him as an eminent writer of the Baroque period.In 1592, Southwell was arrested, tortured, found guilty of treason and finally executed three years later, a fate which ensured his martydom.
