Martin Antonio Del Rio (1551-1608) was a Jesuit theologian who studied occult practices in order to determine which were the devils work. He stressed the heretical nature of occult beliefs and discussed how to respond to the crime of witchcraft. This book became the most commonly used witch-hunting manual of the time. It was used at the Salem witch trials of 1692 and has been cited as a cause of the witch-persecutions in Europe. The work is divided into six books, dealing respectively with magic in general, and of natural magic and illusion, demons, evil-doing, prophecy and divination, legal judgements, and the views of the church. Del Rio was frequently cited by later writers on the subject. The early notation on the front states that (the book) was purchased from Antonio Maria Acbio(?), dated 1607.. (Inventory #: 7882)
