Washington: Government Printing Office, 1903. unbound. Map. Uncolored lithograph. Sheet measures 37" x 28.5" This scarce and incredible sea chart representing New York City, its bay and harbor was issued by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1903. Originally published in 1866, the chart offers incredible detail throughout and notes streets, parks, neighborhoods and other inland features. Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island are featured and parts of Hoboken and Jersey City are included. Depth soundings are noted throughout, as are tips on navigating important channels. Information about tides, lighthouses, beacons and sailing information is also included. The bottom left features two elevation profiles. The map is in good condition. Minor foxing and cracks along the bottom, repaired and lined with canvas. Several manuscript notations in pencils suggest that was was a working chart used by mariners. The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey was first established in 1807. After the Civil War, the bureau took responsibility for mapping and conducting geodetic surveys of the interior of the expanding country. The beautiful quality of this map of New York attests to the fascinating history and hard work that lay behind it. (Inventory #: 268977)
