L'Idiot International was founded by Simone de Beauvoir and largely financed by Sylvina Boissonnas, a patron of leftist movements and a co-creator of Éditions des Femmes. The journal had a second series run for only 5 issues in 1972, and was continued by Tempetes before being revived several additional times during the 20th century. During its later iterations, L'Idiot International and Hallier came under fire several times and faced charges for defamation, incitement to racial hatred, and invasion of privacy. According to WorldCat, as of July 2016, L'Idiot International is found in a handful of North American institutions, while L'Idiot Liberté is held by only 5 North American libraries.
