Surname Book and Racial History. A Compilation and Arrangement of Genealogical and Historical Data for Use By the Students and Members of the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
1918·Salt Lake City
by Gates, Susa Young (editor)
Salt Lake City: General Board of the Relief Society/board Of the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1918. Octavo. From the library of Ernest C. Waldie. 576pp., illustrated with color and black and white maps, the emphasis was on helping to identify those for baptism for the dead, and while using Bishop Usher's dating, attempts to use the events after Noah as evidence for the racial divides. Shem's descendants were known for their disobedience but Ham (from whom they teach the black races were descended). The 290 pages Alphabetical Index of Surnames in the back are those found in the Church Archives and provide their origins. On page 267 it states: "It is true that the black horde ..finally overran the Southern States..After the Civil War (which the author thinks ended in 1864), ..these people took to themselves surnames, and strange indeed were the results." The author is terrified that there certainly was intermixing of races creating problems for the genealogist. Still useful for understanding the ways LDS genealogists viewed their history and sources a century ago. Bound in black cloth lettered in gilt, spine lettering gilt. A very nice copy.
