New York: Harper and Brothers, 1938. First Edition. Inscribee "E. Lauer" is not positively identified; possibly Eric H. Lauer, Dean of the University of Washington, who orchestrated a high-profile purge of Communist Party faculty from the University following WW2. Angelica Balabanoff (1878-1965), an Italian Jew, was among the founders of the Italian Communist Party in 1900; she joined the Russian Bolsheviks in 1917 and served as secretary of the Comintern from 1919-20, during which time she became closely affiliated with Lenin, Trotsky, Zinoviev, and many others. She broke with the Bolsheviks and left Russia in 1922, after which she once again became active in the Italian Socialist party. During Mussolini's regime she went into exile, first in Switzerland, then Paris and, finally, New York City, during which time she published a number of multilingual editions of her poetry and the current work, which is uncommon signed. Octavo (22cm). Cloth-covered boards; 324pp; lacking dustwrapper. Inscribed by Balabanoff on title page: "Long live socialism! Angelica Balabanoff / with best wishes to Prof. Lauer," dated in year of publication. Ink underlining and brief notations throughout, presumably in inscribee Lauer's hand; front hinge thinly cracked; a Good, sound copy. Inscribee's bookplate to front pastedown; note-card with hand-written notes, apparently a lesson plan, laid in. (Inventory #: 31025)
