Service and Sacrifice: Poems [in the scarce dustjacket]
by Robinson, Corinne Roosevelt
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good+ in Very Good- dust jacket. 1919. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Publisher's dark green vertical ribbed cloth, lettered and stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine -- in a slightly worn but integral dust jacket. This is the third volume of poetry published by Theodore Roosevelt's youngest sister, Corinne [1861-1933]. The author wrote poems from an early age and received encouragement from many writers, notably Edith Wharton. Her previous two volumes were 'The Call of Brotherhood' (1912) and 'One Woman to Another and Other' (1914). The long shadow and indominable personality of Theodore Roosevelt is stamped alll over this volume, including its title. It was published in April of 1919 with a memorial dedication to the author's famous brother (who died in January): "To the Memory of My Brother / Theodore Roosevelt / whose watchwords were courage and service / whose life was a / trumpet call to loyalty to America / This book / is gratefully dedicated." A scarce volume in the dust jacket, which includes a lengthy quote of praise from the then-famous critic William Lyon Phelps on the front panel. About a year after this book was published, Corinne Robinson made history on behalf of her brother. At the Republican convention of 1920, she became the first woman ever to formally second the nomination of a Presidential candidate -- her brother's old friend and fellow soldier from the Spanish American War, General Leonard Wood. Her health failed during the '20's -- she had sixteen eye surgeries during the decade, but she lived long enough to switch parties to vote for Franklin Roosevelt in his successful campaigns for the Governorship of New York and the Presidency of the U.S. He was her fifth cousin by birth, and her nephew by marriage -- (her other brother, Eliot, dedicatee of her second volume of verse, was Eleanor Roosevelt's father). This is a clean and unworn copy; the dust jacket shows minor rubbing and soiling and has a small red dampstain on the blank rear panel. . (Inventory #: 39608)
