A member of Company E gives its history from its formation in 1862 through the end of the Civil War. The company was engaged most of the time in Indian wars in the North until 1864, and the appendix by Capt. Charles J. Stees is "Lieut. Col. Marshall's Raid into Dakota--1862." The author Alfred J. Hill and publisher T. H. Lewis also worked together to systematically survey thousands of archeological mound sites throughout the northern plains in the decades before this publication.
