1807. PICQUET, P. Apollon et Les Muses, calendrier pour l'année MDCCCVII, Dédié & Présenté à sa Majesté l'Impératrice & Reine Joséphine. Unpaginated, contents include, half-title, title-page, 2 pp dedication to Joséphine, 32 pp text on Apollo and the Muses plus 12 ff of each month. Illustrated with colour printed stipple engraved frontispiece, plus 10 colour printed stipple engraved portraits of Apollo and the Muses each surrounded by a repeated engraved black-&-white boarder. 4to., 255 x 195 mm, bound in contemporary marbled French calf, black morocco spine label, a.e.g. Paris: Chez Chaise, . A special copy of this Empire Style illustrated almanac with the frontispiece and each portrait colour printed by stipple engraving. The portraits are the work of Louis Lafitte (1770-1828), an allegorical painter and designer whose commissions include the cameo-on-stucco female dancers in the Pompeian style for the dining room of the Château de Malmaison in collaboration with Percier, and the decoration for the temporary triumphal arch erected at the Etoile for the passage of Napoleon and Marie-Louise. There appear to be three editions of this calendar for the year's 1806 to 1808 and are more often found printed entirely in black-and-white rendering it considerably less striking then the present coloured copy. Aside from some light scattered foxing and a small old repair to the headcap, the book remains in fine attractive condition. PROVENANCE: Bibliothèque du Docteur Lucien-Graux (1878-1944) with his gilt-stamped brown morocco ex libris on the front paste-down & F. Meunié, with printed ex-libris on front paste-down. Grand-Carteret, Les Almanachs francais, p. 396.
