Litteratura Iuris, Final Edition, Two Folding Plates
by Hommel, Karl Ferdinand
1763. Scarce Eighteenth-Century Legal Bibliography with an Interesting Association Hommel, Karl Ferdinand [1722-1781]. Litteratura Iuris. Leipzig: Apud Casparum Fritsch, 1779. [xvi], 366, pp. Two folding copperplate leaves. Octavo (7-3/4" x 4-3/4"). Contemporary paper covered boards, early hand-lettered title to spine, speckled edges. Light rubbing and soiling to boards, rubbing to extremities with wear to joints, edges and corners, spine abraded, bookplate of Guido Kisch to front pastedown, large copperplate vignette to title page. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, some discoloration to margins of folding leaves, leaf of notes in Kisch's hand and a circular for a legal journal laid in. Early owner signature and fragment of label to front pastedown, two later signatures to head of title page, one Guido Kisch's dated 1952, interior otherwise clean. $1,500. * Second edition, revised, the final and best edition of this work. Each item in this select bibliography has a detailed critical annotation, many of them running a page or more in length. The unusual allegorical title vignette, indicating a sifter separated human from animal heads, indicates the book's intention to steer the reader to the best law books. The first folding plate illustrates the novel pictorial method used in Johann Buno's Memoriale Institutionum Iuris (1672) and Memoriale Corporis Iuris (1673). The second plate reproduces a pair of facsimile tablet fragments from the Corpus Juris Civilis. It relates to a discussion of issues dealing with transcription and philology. The work concludes with a detailed index. The laid-in items are a slip of notes with references to this book and a circular for Quellen and Forschungen zur Strafrechtsgeschichte, a German legal journal. Kisch [1889-1985] was a prominent jurist and scholar who produced important works on humanism, Jewish law and history, German jurisprudence and the history of German-Jewish relations. The first two editions were published in 1751 and 1761. All are scarce. Including all three editions, OCLC locates 4 copies in North America, 4 in law libraries (Harvard, Library of Congress, University of Michigan, University of Texas-Austin, all 1761 editions), 1 of the 1779 edition (New York Public Library), no copies of the first edition.
