Bound by Donald Glaister, assisted by Gabby Cooksey, the pages on tabs to allow for complete opening of each page spread, full black goatskin with two recessed panels, one 9-1/8 x 3-7/16 and the other 9-1/8 x 2-7/16 inches, each abstract design composed of onlaid black triangles in stingray and ostrich, water snake and goatskin, mesh edging (gold and silver), the base of the panels in a sanded and "ruffled" steel-grey leather, title blind stamped on spine, doublures of cork dyed black (by Suzanne Moore), headbands with gold bordered by black on top and silver bordered with black on bottom, signed by the binder on lower rear turn-in with this customary gold dot, housed in custom-made black cloth over boards clamshell box, lined with black felt, title in black on paper label, grey shaded to black, with author / photographer and date. The text comprises two poems and two written reflections by Jacqueline Thurston, formatted and letterpress printed by Jessica Spring at Springtide Press in Mrs. Eaves type, printed in light grey, from photopolymer plates. The book was elegantly designed by Donald Glaister, Jessica Spring, and Jacqueline Thurston. The four images, each 9.25 inches square, are Cibachrome (ilfochrome) prints, a dye destruction positive-to-positive photographic process where the print is made on a dimensionally-stable polyester base, using silver metals. Produced in a restrained, elegiac palette of black, gray, and silver, SHADOWLAND opens with "Night of Shadows," a celebration of the enigmatic nature of dreams and a close encounter between Earth and Mars that occurred in the summer of 2003. It closes with "Winged Grief," a tribute to the artist's mother. Shells and stones, skeletons, lichen and pods, compose the haunting, shimmering images. This is a stunning book - at once personal yet universal in appeal. The use of black paper and grey type could have resulted in a much darker book, but it didn't. The design and images positively glisten and the reader / viewer is completely engulfed in the wonders of the natural world - through the artifice of text and images. A splendid book!Jacqueline Thurston is an artist, writer, and Professor Emerita at San Jose State University. She is twice the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and was a Fulbright Scholar to Egypt. Thurston's photographs are in major national and international museum collections, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Library of Congress; the International Museum of Photography; the Carnegie Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Cantor Museum; the University of New Mexico Museum of Art; the Center for Photography at Arizona University; the Bibliotheque Nationale, France; and the Bibliotheque Alexandria, Egypt.
