by Designer Binding. More, Hannah. Kevin Crossley-Holland
London: The Folio Society, 1989. Designer binding by Hannah More: full deerskin, buffed over sculpted boards with grey morocco at top corners, brown deerskin in blind swirl pattern with title in blind relief on spine, all edged stained brown with the top edge gilded on top of brown staining to match leather of binding and to suggest a Norse longship, the gilding in concentric waves with interlocking U shape separating the circles, headbands of brown leather, leather turn-ins, endpapers are Ms. More's own hand-made paste papers with embedded thread and miscellaneous fibers in various neutral shades again in wave-like patterns. Housed in grey cloth over boards clamshell box lined with brown padded felt. When open, the book is meant to suggest a Viking Longship with the spine lettering the prow and the front and rear panels the sides of the Longship. A beautiful binding, thoughtfully conceived and well executed. (Inventory #: 11163)
