A Marginal Jew; Rethinking the Historical Jesus, Vol. 1-5
New York, (1991 - 2016)
by Meier, John P.
New York, (1991 - 2016): Doubleday. First Edition. Thick Octavo. John Meier's work is the most exhaustive using solid historical information about Jesus which has been acclaimed by scholars of different faiths for its thoroughness, accuracy and insights. Evangelical scholars will disagree with some of his conclusions but none will deny his superb scholarship and his handling of existing biblical and extra-biblical sources. Volume 4 deals with the important aspect of the historical teaching and the Mosaic Law. Jacob Neusner notes this is: "the definitive work on Jesus and the law." Hindt Najman at the University of Toronto notes that his involves a profound involvement of Jesus with Halakhah. He writes: "This work will profoundly affect the ways Judaism and Christianity understand each other and themselves." Although the most distinguished Roman Catholic biographer of Jesus (as Harold Bloom notes), he has been considered a heretic by both Catholics and mainline evangelicals. Vol. I, 484p.; Vol. II, , 1118p.; Vol. III, 703p.; Vol. IV, 733p. Vol. V, 441p. The last volume deals with the parables of Jesus that virtually all agree are among the earliest and represented by the Q source especially with reference to the four parables-those of the Mustard Seed, the Evil Tenants, the Talents, and the Great Supper. Besides the 3,470 pages, there are extensive indexes, bibliographical references. Perhaps the greatest study of Jesus in light of the biblical text, extra-biblical sources, and archaeological and contemporary aspects from the earliest Christian and Jewish thinkers. All bound in paper covered boards back in cloth, spine lettering either copper or gilt, all copies near fine in near fine unclipped pictorial dust jackets.
