by VALENTIJN, Françoise (VALENTYN)
Amsterdam: Francois Valentijn, 1762. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Image measures 17.5 x 21.5". This incredible 1762 map depicts the Ganges River Delta in beautiful detail. Covers the Sultanate of Bengal under the Dutch East India Company and labels several important Dutch forts, agricultural areas, mountains, forests, swamps, islands, towns and a host of other topographical features. Coastal features and some depth soundings are also noted. Originally issued in 1666 by Johan van Leenen, this map was issued by Valentijn in 1762. The map is in good condition with some toning and damage along the fold near the left margin. Some repairs near right margin. The map is lined with archival tissue for stability. Minor foxing and offsetting. François Valentijn (1666-1727) was a Dutch minister and naturalist who worked as a missionary in India. He worked with the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the East Indies and composed his best known work, "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën," a monumental history and description of the East Indies and its surrounding lands that remains a significant primary source today. This map is a fascinating document of Dutch involvement in the region. (Inventory #: 269500)
