1938. Original comic strip artwork. Measuring 22" x 5.25". Pen and ink on artists board. Pin holes at the corners of each panel, bumping at the edges and darkening from glue residue, very good or better. A Thimble Theatre daily strip by E.C. Segar dated July 22, 1938 less than three months before his death in October at the age of 43 from liver disease. The strip shows Popeye investigated the mysterious disappearance of trees at a farm by an underground demons. Beneath the strip in blue pencil Segar has written a note to his assistant: "Diner is served! Put design on arm." Debuting in 1919, Thimble Theatre limped along until the introduction of the one-eye sailor in 1929. Popeye proved so popular he quickly became the star of the strip with his name was added to the title. A wonderful example of original art by the creator of one of the best-known comic strip characters of all time. . (Inventory #: 410619)
